ArcticNet Projects Aboard the CCGS Amundsen, 2023
The 2023 scientific expedition aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Amundsen is hosting several ArcticNet-funded projects this year again.
The scientific icebreaker Amundsen left its home port of Quebec City on July 8th, 2023 for a 111-day journey across the Arctic. The science activities of several ArcticNet-funded projects will take place during legs 2, 3 and 4 of the expedition, from August 10th to October 26th.
The research programs supported in 2023 will study the arctic and subarctic marine ecosystems through multidisciplinary research activities and integrated studies targeting the physical, chemical and biological environments and the geology of the seabed of the Labrador Sea, Baffin Bay, Nares Strait, Lancaster Sound, Foxe Basin and Hudson Strait.
ArcticNet’s projects aim to assess the long-term impacts of climate change on the marine ecosystem of the Canadian Arctic through comprehensive multidisciplinary sampling. By studying various aspects such as geology, kelp, fish, and biogeochemical processes, these projects seek to understand how climate-induced changes are affecting the Canadian Arctic Ocean and its marginal seas.
The ArcticNet projects include:
- Arctic Fish: Fisheries resources in the changing Canadian Arctic Ocean, Project Lead: Maxime Geoffroy
- Fate of kelp forests in a rapidly changing Arctic, Project lead: Philippe Archambault
- Arctic Seafloor Mapping Data Processing and Dissemination, Project Leads: Ian Church and Jean-Carlos Montero-Serrano
- A Co-operative Observation Network to Address Community Research Priorities While Studying Marine Biogeochemistry, Project lead: Brent Else
- Understanding the effects of climate change and industrial development on contaminant processes and exposure in the Canadian Arctic marine ecosystem (ACCCPE), Project lead: Gary Stern
- GO-Ice: Glacier-Ocean-Iceberg Dynamics in a Changing Canadian Arctic, Project Lead: Luke Copland
- Nutrient fluxes and living marine resources in the Inuit Nunangat, Project lead: Jean-Éric Tremblay
- Youth research training program with the Foxe Basin Kivalliq North Sapujiyiit/Guardians of the Sea Society, Project Leads: Sarah Newell and Barnie Aggark
- Rapidly changing ecosystem dynamics in the Arctic Ocean’s Last Ice Area (RED-AO), Project Leads: Audrey Limoges and Mathieu Ardyna
