Joint Funding Initiative with SAGES

In early 2024, ArcticNet and the Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society (SAGES) partnered to launch a joint fund to foster international collaborative work between both ArcticNet and SAGES colleagues. The fund supports research expenses such as field work, equipment, workshops, and more. Two ArcticNet researchers were able to benefit from the joint-initiative. First, Dr. Luke Copland, University of Ottawa (ArcticNet), will collaborate with Dr. Anna Crawford, University of Stirling (SAGES), to have a more comprehensive understanding of Arctic ice hazard populations and their risks to shipping. Download the press release here IQALUIT, December 6, 2023 The Government of Canada announced today that ArcticNet will be funded for the next five years through the Strategic Science Fund (SSF), jointly administered by Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada and Health Canada. The successful proposal was co-developed by ArcticNet, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, and Polar Knowledge Canada with support from over 70 organizations across the country and internationally in an effort to carry forward the internationally recognized and respected ArcticNet. The ArcticNet team would like to offer our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Maya Bhatia, who passed away on August 16th while conducting field work in the High Arctic near Aujuittuq (Grise Fiord), Nunavut. This tragic loss is felt widely and deeply throughout the Arctic science community, as Maya’s career allowed her to travel across the world and touch the lives of so many along the way. Maya’s research explored carbon and nutrient dynamics, and the role of microbial communities in watersheds. ArcticNet Projects Aboard the CCGS Amundsen, 2023 The 2023 scientific expedition aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Amundsen is hosting several ArcticNet-funded projects this year again. The scientific icebreaker Amundsen left its home port of Quebec City on July 8th, 2023 for a 111-day journey across the Arctic.
