Joint Funding Initiative with SAGES

In early 2024, ArcticNet and the Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society (SAGES) partnered to launch a joint fund to foster international collaborative work between both ArcticNet and SAGES colleagues. The fund supports research expenses such as field work, equipment, workshops, and more.

Two ArcticNet researchers were able to benefit from the joint-initiative.

First, Dr. Luke Copland, University of Ottawa (ArcticNet), will collaborate with Dr. Anna Crawford, University of Stirling (SAGES), to have a more comprehensive understanding of Arctic ice hazard populations and their risks to shipping. Dr. Copland has focused on the calving and drift of “conventional” icebergs from glaciers across the Canadian Arctic and Greenland, while Dr. Crawford has conducted a diverse set of studies on the drift and deterioration of ice islands.

Their joint research will focus on the current and future spatiotemporal variability of ice hazard distributions, their impact on ship routing and the associated implications for climate emissions and maritime operations. This collaboration will support multifaceted PhD research on ice hazards and shipping and contribute to the development of sustainable shipping strategies in the Arctic.

Second, Prof. Guillaume St-Onge, Rimouski Institute of Marine Sciences (ArcticNet), will collaborate with Dr. Craig Smeaton, School of Geography and Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews (SAGES), to enhance and expand research on the role of submarine mass movement events as a mechanism to trap and store carbon in near shore fjordic environments. Prof. St-Onge has been focusing on extensive sedimentological experience of submarine mass movement events in Saguenay Fjord, while Dr. Smeaton’s expertise is in sedimentary carbon dynamics in Scottish fjords.

The project is poised to investigate at once the biogeochemistry and sedimentology aspects of the coastal carbon cycle.

Both projects will build research relationships between colleagues, and strengthen the relationship between ArcticNet and SAGES.

We look forward to future international collaboration opportunities.
