ArcticNet recommends that all researchers conducting research in the North, and specifically in Indigenous communities, take part in courses focusing on how to conduct ethical research. ArcticNet is happy to recommend the trainings below.

McMaster University

Course: Community-Engaged Research, Instructor: Dr. Gita Ljubicic

Region: Inuit Nunangat. This course is focused on working with Inuit communities, but can be tailored to those interested in working with other Indigenous communities in Canada.

Cost: Equivalent to graduate course registration cost at McMaster, or the student’s home university.

Indigenous Awareness Canada

Course: 201 Indigenous Awareness Certification; takes about 4 to 8 hours to complete

Description: This comprehensive and information-rich course offers important foundational knowledge, background, and context. This training is recognized and recommended by Indigenous groups and leaders, which is fundamental to meeting corporate obligations and training requirements in support of programs like the CCAB (Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business) PAR initiative or the Government of Canada’s directives to all Canadians on adopting the Recommendations of the TRC (Truth & Reconciliation Commission)

Description: A 7-week Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from CIERA explores Indigenous histories and contemporary issues in Canada. This course offers an introduction to sociopolitical issues of Northern Quebec that is the ancestral territory of many Aboriginal peoples and focuses on the understanding of northern community cultures, the place of these lands in our collective psyche, and the different perspectives of territorial development and sociopolitical evolution. This course is for anyone who has an interest in Northern Quebec and who wishes to learn about this territory, its history, societies and challenges.

Course: Indigenous Canada; 12 weeks – 2-3 hours/week (approx. 21 hours)

Description: A 12-lesson Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from the Faculty of Native Studies that explores Indigenous histories and contemporary issues in Canada. From an Indigenous perspective, this course explores key issues facing Indigenous peoples today from a historical and critical perspective highlighting national and local Indigenous-settler relations. Topics include the fur trade and other exchange relationships, land claims and environmental impacts, legal systems and rights, political conflicts and alliances, Indigenous political activism, and contemporary Indigenous life, art and its expressions.

This includes data from First Nations – including languages, cultures, knowledge, stories, songs, ceremonies; data about First Nations – such as demographics, housing, health, economies, labor, education, and data on or about First Nations lands and resources, including waters, medicines, and animals. If so, then this course is for you.

This unique online learning opportunity introduces the First Nations principles of OCAP® – ownership, control, access, and possession of First Nations data by First Nations. Working with First Nations thought leaders and artists, subject matter experts, and online education professionals, FNIGC is proud to offer this online course that explores First Nations self-determination, self-governance, and collective rights to data sovereignty through the framework of OCAP®.
