On September 25, ArcticNet held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) to present the year’s results, proceed with the appointment of a new board member, and share the accomplishments of the past year.
Highlights:
- We are pleased to welcome Teddi Herring to the Board of Directors as an early-career northern researcher. Dr. Herring is a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Calgary in the Department of Civil Engineering. - The audited financial statements for 2024–2025 were approved. It was noted that all activities of the Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) program have been completed, and those supported by the Strategic Science Fund (SSF) have been initiated as planned.
- Among the highlights presented by our Scientific Director, Philippe Archambault, is a study published in Nature in 2025, partially funded by ArcticNet. It shows that while the total number of local plant species remains relatively stable, Arctic plant communities are transforming due to climate warming and shrub expansion. These changes could have significant impacts on ecosystems and local livelihoods in the region.
- Executive Director Christine Barnard highlighted that in 2024–2025, ArcticNet invested nearly $12 million in 26 research projects funded in partnership with Genome Québec and Polar Knowledge Canada. Eight additional projects were funded through the North-by-North program, representing a $3 million investment.
- Among the 227 people involved in the research teams of the partnered projects, 34% are Indigenous, 50% are Northerners, and gender parity has been achieved. These figures reflect ArcticNet’s evolution over the past twenty years and its ongoing commitment to collaboration, representation, and inclusion.
We warmly thank all members who attended and contributed to the discussion! As part of its ongoing transition, ArcticNet is working to expand its membership community. Stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to get involved.
Finally, we strongly encourage you to consult the 2024–2025 Annual Report to learn more about our accomplishments over the past year.
