PRESS RELEASE: ArcticNet Annual Scientific Meeting 2022

ARCTIC RESEARCHERS AND EXPERTS GATHER FOR THE ARCTICNET ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING 2022

Download press release

November 30, 2022 – ArcticNet is thrilled to host its 18th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM2022) in Toronto, ON from December 4-8, 2022. The ASM2022 welcomes researchers, students, Inuit, Northerners, policymakers and stakeholders from across the North to address the numerous environmental, social, economic and political challenges and opportunities emerging from climate change and modernization in the Arctic.

This conference is an opportunity to hear the stories of research leaders in the context of a rapidly changing Arctic. ArcticNet works closely with northern residents to ensure our research programme is done with full Indigenous partnership and reflects their knowledge and priorities.

Among the topics covered will collaboration between the academic scientific community and northern researchers in incorporating Indigenous Traditional Knowledge (ITC) in scientific studies. Papers will also look at the environmental, biological and social impacts of climate change on Arctic ecosystems and communities.

As one of the largest Arctic research gatherings in the world, the ASM2022 is the hub for Arctic and northern research excellence and knowledge sharing in Canada. This year, renowned researchers from all fields of northern research will showcase results, projects and lessons learned across five expert plenary panels, with 29 world-class plenary speakers, 61 topical sessions, 230 oral presentations and over 1240 research posters. Presentations come from a range of academic, government, Northern, and Indigenous and Inuit researchers and experts.

The ASM2022 will also feature the first Early Career Northern Researchers (ECNR) Annual Meeting, formally known as Student Day, running from December 4-5, 2022. This first annual meeting features a partnership between the ArcticNet Student Association (ASA) and the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies (ACUNS).

The ASM2022 also creates space to celebrate research innovation, inclusion, and excellence through its Award Ceremony. Awards will be on Thursday, December 8 including from:

  • The Polar Knowledge Canada Northern Science Award
  • The ArcticNet Student Association and the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) Canada Mentorship Award
  • Student Poster Awards, sponsored by Amundsen Science, Canadian Science Publishing and Sentinel North
  • The Inuit Partnership of Excellence Award and the Inuit Recognition Award presented by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami
